Why the Sheffield Children’s

Hospital?

One of my earliest memories is standing on the wall, clinging to the railing in front of the hospital waving to my big brother who was recovering from a broken leg, which he broke whilst giving me a piggy back in the 1950s.  Also in memory of our eldest son James, who convalesced there after brain surgery at the Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. Both hospitals continue to do so much for the people of this area and beyond.

Rodger McPhail, who so generously allowed us to use some of his superb scenes of rural life in this publication, is one of the foremost naturalist artists in the country. Best known for his atmospheric watercolours of wildlife, he is also an accomplished oil painter, cartoonist and commercial illustrator. Born in 1953, he studied at Coventry and Liverpool Art colleges, and if you would like to see a range of his books, click here. And to see a selection of his current artwork for sale, you can visit here.

From the foreword

“Congratulations to Anne and all others involved, on compiling such a beautiful, essential tome; in support of such a wonderful and important cause, The Children’s Hospital in Sheffield. I wish you every success and to each reader many happy lunches.” Lady Edward Manners

Introduction

I have always enjoyed cooking and offered to cook the lunch for the gun hut, thinking in terms of a two-course meal; a hotpot/stew with a vegetable and a pudding or cheese to follow,  well... that was wishful thinking!  Three proper courses, with only a microwave and a couple of hotplates to do it on.  That was fun!  To be fair, that did not last long and very soon there was a small gas cooker, two microwaves, a heated trolley, a fridge and a freezer to play with. The guns were always very appreciative and even started asking for recipes and so this book was born. This collection dates back to both my Grandmothers’ time in the 1920s & 30s right up to Master-chef winners. Anne Davis
